Treating Newberry and surrounding areas to excellent, compassionate medicine is so much more than a job for our veterinarians. They are dedicated, heart and soul, to the well being and longevity of every pet that comes into their care. In addition, they have a long history of involvement with the community, offering much-needed wellness care to pets in need. With their years of experience, diverse skill sets and a shared commitment to the human-animal bond, our veterinarians truly set us apart.
Dr. Jill Lerman
For 15 years, my first dog, Oliver, was my best friend. He was the one I turned to when I was sad, scared or just needed a hug. Even at that young age, I understood the connections that people have with their pets. So it was no surprise that at eight years old I already knew that I wanted to be a veterinarian. During my high school years, my passion to help animals and advocate for their needs grew stronger. I found myself drawn to animals in need, and was happiest when I could rescue an injured bird or search for a lost pet and return it back to its heartbroken family. I loved the sciences and was intrigued by the challenges that medicine presented. Thus began my pursuit to become a veterinarian.
In 1986, I graduated from the University of Connecticut, and in 1990, I received my degree from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. After leaving Auburn, I relocated to Gainesville, and have lived and practiced here ever since.
I am grateful to have achieved my lifelong dream and honored by the trust placed in me, not only by my patients but also by the people that love them. I treasure the long term relationships that I develop with my clients as we work together to ensure that the pets they love receive the best care possible and are always treated with kindness, compassion and respect.
When I am not with my patients, I am usually home cuddling my two kitties, TJ and Blaze, or enjoying family time with my husband Ray, also a veterinarian, and my children, Ryan and Jenna. I am not much of a hobby person, but I do enjoy spending time at the beach and traveling to the mountains to go hiking, whitewater rafting and soak in the beauty of nature!

I am so fortunate to have spent the past 25 years doing a job that I love. I obviously wanted to be a veterinarian because I am passionate about animals, and spending my life taking care of them has been a dream come true. However, it is the connection with folks that share my love of these animals that has made this a truly remarkable journey.
I have always appreciated that animals are a very important part of many people’s lives, and I could find my purpose helping people take care of the pets they love. I have been involved in the veterinary field since my early twenties, but it was later in my life when I understood that I could do that best as a veterinarian. I was 44 years old when I graduated from The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, and then did a 13 month internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. As a veterinarian I help families provide whatever is needed for their pet’s well-being, comfort and “happiness.” For many of them I have been there from the day they introduce a new family member until the sad day we all have to say good bye to an old friend.
My husband is also an animal lover, and we are devoted to our own 2 cats, 2 dogs and a horse. We enjoy the energy and vitality of the young animals we have now. Most of our former pets came to us because they needed care, and a safe place to heal from emotional and physical injury. It is so rewarding to watch them begin to trust, develop confidence and enjoy the companionship of people and other pets.
If I am not working I am in the barn with my amazing horse, Tess.

Throughout my life, my pets have always been a part of the family. When I was young, they taught me responsibility, compassion, and were a part of every childhood memory. As I grew older, they have always been loving companions and friends. So, when I was given the opportunity to attend Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, it was a dream come true. Since then, I have had the opportunity to practice medicine in Washington State, Colorado, and now Gainesville, and I am honored to share my passion for animals and to help other families share the same joy that I have with my pets. My favorite part of the workday is talking with people about their day-to-day life with their pets. Hearing about their adventures together, the daily laughs, the treats that get slipped under the table, their favorite toys, the valuables that they destroyed as puppies and kittens, and how they’ve changed over the years, still make me smile and laugh.
In my family I have two of the most bratty but wonderful cats, the sweetest and most gentle ferret in the world, and an adorable hedgehog with a particularly prickly personality. Caring for my own pets as they’ve grown older and developed medical conditions has given me perspective and understanding for helping others to care for their pets too.
What I find most fulfilling about my work is to empower clients to provide the best possible care for their pets. There’s nothing that I love hearing more than “he’s acting like a puppy again” or “she‘s been so much more loving recently” after starting a new treatment. My priority in caring for pets is to strengthen the bond that people share with their animals by helping all aspects of their care – from diet and behavior to medications and surgery, I want to do everything I can to support their health and well-being.
I could not love a place of business any more than I do Jonesville Animal Hospital. Both veterinarians are incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and loving towards the animals. The staff has some of the friendliest people I've met, and their professionalism is top-notch. The facility is large, clean, and modern, and the extended hours are fantastic for working professionals. Thank you for being so great to our dog, Charlie!
Dr. Vliet and Dr. Lerman are awesome! When one of my dogs was afraid of going to the vet, they worked with me to make her visits as stress-free as possible. They go out of their way to make every visit great and the facility is clean and inviting. They know me by name when I come to buy dog food and always offer to bring it to the car for me if I have my two young daughters with me.
I have had the privilege of having Dr. Lerman taking care of our animals for over 20 years. The compassion, knowledge and attention to detail displayed in the variety of situations we have experienced is truly amazing and appreciated. It is so evident that everyone associated with Jonesville Animal Hospital has a true love of providing quality care for animals.
The staff at Jonesville Animal Hospital is always exceptional! Our beloved Border Collie, Mysti, was a patient there for 10 years, and we always felt as if they loved her as much as we did. Even after her passing they sent our family the most heart felt, loving message to console us. We think the world of the entire team! Now our new puppy, Boo, will enjoy their loving care too.
The Doctors and Staff at Jonesville Animal Hospital are top-notch. They stayed late, performed emergency surgeries after "normal" business hours, and made sure to call and update me of their status even though it was 9PM at night. I feel like they treat each pet as if it were their own, and always have the best interest of the pet in mind.
Jonesville Animal Hospital is simply the best! Our dogs have been patients at Jonesville Animal Hospital ever since it was first opened by Dr. Vliet and Dr. Lerman. They have cared for our whippet and our two greyhounds. The expert care, knowledge, and compassion shown to us by Drs. Vliet and Lerman and their entire team is outstanding. It is obvious that they love our dogs.
I have entrusted the care of my three dogs to Drs. Vliet and Lerman for about 10 years and am so pleased with their practice. I like that I've never had to deal with a waiting room full of animals; they check every patient in quickly and get them into exam rooms to avoid any "doggy personality differences!" Their support staff always make my dogs feel welcomed, non-threatened and their favorite patients of all time!
The wonderful care provided to our three cats, at Jonesville Animal Hospital, makes me wish that they were my health care providers! Dr. Vliet and Dr. Lerman have given our cats exceptional care at every visit. They've helped us navigate behavior issues and patiently saw us to a resolution. These fine vets have put together an incredible staff, all of whom adore animals! I cannot say enough about JAH, and highly recommend them!
I recently moved to the Gainesville area, and I was thrilled to discover Jonesville Animal Hospital. My 10-year-old Lab suffers from a few health problems and I wanted to find a top-notch local vet for her. Jonesville Animal Hospital has more than exceeded my expectations. This is by far the best service I've ever received from a veterinary hospital.
