Your pet should be fully recovered from the general anesthesia that he or she received yesterday for the declaw procedure. However, your pet's appetite may be decreased for 1-3 days after the procedure due to the discomfort of the surgery. Although your pet is receiving pain medication to keep him or her comfortable, you should expect your pet to walk tenderly and be reluctant to jump for 5-10 days after surgery. Be sure to administer any prescribed pain medications as directed to help with this discomfort. If your pet continues to limp after 2 weeks, please call. IMPORTANT: You must use pelleted newspaper litter in place of regular litter for 5 days after surgery to prevent infection from developing in the paws. Occasionally, there may be slight bleeding or spotting from the paws during the first 24 hours at home. If this occurs, please call. Because there are no sutures used in this procedure, your pet does not need to return for a follow-up visit. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to call. |
